Irrfan Khan, one of India’s best-known exports to Hollywood, is unhappy with certain 'manipulations' that take place in the decisions made by Indian awards shows.

Last year, he delivered critically acclaimed turns in Shoojit Sircar's Piku and Meghna Gulzar's Talvar, but didn't take home a single trophy (barring one for the former at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne).

Not the one to mince words, Khan, in an interview with Mumbai Mirror, made his displeasure known about how he was relegated to the ‘supporting actor’ category even when the role was much more than that.

The actor said:

"Some people with power and resources manipulate these things. It's part of the game and works for some time, but I haven't built my career on this. It's the audience that eventually makes and breaks you and they know that Piku was not a supporting role."

His co-star in the film, Amitabh Bachchan, walked away with a number of awards as the film's lead actor, while Irrfan was nominated in one or two — that too not in the leading role category. Bachchan not only took home a Filmfare for Best Actor (Critics); he also got a Screen Award, a Stardust Award, a BIG Star Entertainment Award, and a Zee Cine Award, besides a host of other nominations.

Even at the recently held 63rd National Awards, Bachchan trumped Khan to get the medal for Best Actor. While many actors don’t hold many other commercial award ceremonies in high regard, almost all of them deeply value the National Awards, considered the most credible.

Either way, as Irrfan said, it's the audience that makes you or breaks you, and the audience knows what happened this summer.
