Six days after a 19-year-old female student of the Banaras Hindu University was allegedly molested by unidentified bike-borne men, the police are yet to record the woman's statement. She had registered a first information report (FIR) on 22 September, a day after the incident.
"So far, the woman could not be reached to record her statement," a police officer investigating the case told The Indian Express, claiming that the complainant hadn't answered his phone calls and he was waiting for her to rejoin university after October 2. According to the report, the student's parents took her home after the protests at BHU intensified. "I am waiting for her to return."
Cops have reportedly found CCTV footage of the alleged molesters, but are yet to identify them.
Meanwhile, after increasing protests against the university administration and the chief proctor ON Singh who, the students allege, mishandled the woman's complaint, he reportedly resigned late Tuesday night on "moral grounds".
While another professor has been given interim charge at the moment, the university might reportedly hire a female proctor, reported India Today.
On Tuesday, the university vice chancellor Girish Chandra Tripathi made several new appointments. Tripathi, who is due to retire in November, could make these appointments only two months before his date of retirement, which means Tuesday was the last such day for him to make decisions. However, at least one of his decisions--to appoint teacher OP Upadhyay as Medical Superintendent of Sir Sunderlal Hospital which is inside the BHU campus--has raised eyebrows, reported The Indian Express. Upadhyay has been indicted of sexual harassment in 2013 at a magistrate court in Fiji. He was on study break at the time, and the court found him guilty of sexually harassing a 21-year-old woman.
