Customs officials on Thursday booked a businessman from Gujarat for faking disability and trying to use a wheelchair to smuggle gold at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.

But what shocked the department officials was that as soon as the accused realized that he had been caught, he rose to his feet and walked out of the airport unassisted.

According to a Times of India report, Nimisha Gudhka, who hails from Jamnagar, was traveling from Dubai and hiding eight gold bars that weighed 660 gm and were worth ₹19.8 lakh in his trouser pockets and purse.

However Gudhka's ruse did not work as the officials, who he had assumed would treat him leniently because of his 'disability', became suspicious and decided to question him.

Soon Gudhka broke down and confessed to carrying the gold bars in his person. He was booked for smuggling under Customs Act and then asked to leave.

"When we told him he could go, he stood up at once and walked away nonchalantly, abandoning the wheelchair and without help from the assistant," the officer reportedly said.

In a similar incident last month, a wheelchair-bound passenger was arrested for trying to smuggle gold at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).
