As the Supreme Court continued to hear the Triple Talaq matter today, the Centre said the practice was not an integral part of Islam and abolishing it should not threaten its foundation.
The Indian Express reported the Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi as saying that since triple talaq it is not practiced in 25 Islamic countries, it cannot possibly be essential to the practice of Islam.
He added that in Hinduism, women used to practice Sati till the law termed it as illegal and obsolete, when Chief Justice JS Khehar asked him if any religious traditions had ever been set aside by courts before.
Rohatgi also said the issue should not be viewed as discrimination towards the minority community.
"It is an issue of a minority community and that of women within that community," he said.
