Even as tragedy struck the families of students Ritu Singh and Sanchit Chhabra, the parents of both the students showed great compassion by donating their eyes.
Ritu and Sanchit were in the Honda City car that fell off the from the Punjabi Bagh flyover in west Delhi on Monday morning killing them. Five other students who were in the car were badly injured.
Sanchit's father Raj Kumar told The Hindustan Times, "By the time an NGO approached us with request for donation, only eyes of my son were usable. We agreed to donate his eyes without a second thought. My son was a helpful and friendly boy. Even in his death, he will be helping people."
PTI had reported on Monday that the victims were on their way to the IP College in Narela for their second semester exams. They were first-year students of Delhi Institute of Professional Studies.
Ritu's father Malkhan Singh was also of the opinion that donating his daughters eyes meant that she would live in those two people even after her death.
"People should be made aware about organ donation. My only regret is that her other organs were not usable," he told The Hindustan Times.
Apart from Ritu and Sanchit, their friends Pranav, Garima, Rishab, Rajat and Raja were in the car, the police said.
The students had met at Rajat's house in east Punjabi Bagh and Rajat was driving.
The police said that they suspect that Rajat may have been speeding, but nothing was certain.
