AGARTALA -- A tribal woman sold her eleven-day-old son for treatment of her ailing husband at Rangia Tilla of Haldia ADC village in West Tripura.

Father of the child, a daily wage labour who is ill for a long time and unable to work has confessed that the child was given to another family for which they got an amount.

Ailing Usha Ranjan Debbarma lying in the mud floor of his hut said, "I am very ill and so demanded financial help from the government for my treatment. I gave my child to someone and got Rs. 5000 for it. I request the government for help."

According to report, the distressed tribal family with no other option left to survive, sold the baby to a childless couple of Khowai.

The Left Front Government in Tripura was left red faced after the report surfaced while the incident has become a tool for opposition ahead of crucial assembly election barely after eight months.

BJP state observer Sunil Deodhar slammed the Manik Sarkar Government and alleged that it was just another evidence of how the poor people are being deprived or ignored in this Left-ruled state.

The child was later recovered by Child Line Foundation from the couple at Khowai and presently kept in a government home.

This incident took place last week and it's the third that has occurred in two years time.
