In an horrific incident, a taxi driver in Delhi ran over a four-year-old boy, then took him and his mother in his vehicle on a roundabout tour of city hospitals for over five hours, till the boy succumbed to his injuries.
Rohit Kumar, a resident of Indira Vikas Colony in New Delhi, was playing on the street on Friday, when the cab, a Maruti Suzuki Eeco, ran over him, according to The Times of India.
When a crowd started to gather around, the driver, identified as one Rahul, offered the boy and his mother a ride to the hospital. But the driver took them to over four hospitals, pretending that they "weren't ready to admit him" and kept on going, all the while cajoling the mother not to press charges against him.
Rohit's mother Vasanti Kumari, told TOI:
"Those were five hours of horror. I have three more children who have constantly been asking me where Rohit is. How do I tell them they will never see their brother again?"
The driver also reportedly threatened to lock the mother and the boy in the car and set it on fire, if they talked about the incident to anyone.
After losing the initial five precious hours, Vasanti, who was not carrying a mobile phone with her, managed to contact her husband from a local phone booth. But by the time they took the boy to the hospital, he was declared dead on arrival.
Despite the threats, Rohit's parents lodged a complaint against the driver and he was arrested on the same day from his house.
