After Aurangzeb Road was renamed Dr APJ Adbul Kalam Road, last year, residents of the national capital may have to get used to another big change involving Race Course Road in Lutyens Delhi, which is also where the Prime Minister's residence is located.
Bharatiya Janata Party lawmaker Meenakshi Lekhi has written to the government suggesting that Race Course Road should be renamed "Ekatma Marg," since the current name "does not match with Indian culture."
Ekatma Manavvad or Integral Humanism is a philosophy associated with Deendayal Upadhyaya, chief of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh from 1953 to 1968, who rejected both communism and capitalism.
Lekhi will formally propose changing the name at a meeting of the NDMC (New Delhi Municipal Council), which is the municipal corporation overseeing RCR. The suggestion to change Aurangzeb Road had come from BJP's Mahesh Girri, last year, and it was supported by the Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government.
Out of NDMC's 13 members, two are from AAP, although Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is receovering from a throat surgery, may skip the meeting, The Telegraph reported.
The agenda for today's meeting: "To take the philosophy of 'Ekatma' to the mind of the public at large, and as the name of the road, viz 'Race Course Road', on which residence of Prime Minister of India is situated, does not match with Indian culture. Hon'ble MP has, therefore, requested to rename Race Course Road under the NDMC area as Ekatma Marg so that this name would remind every Prime Minister about the last person of the society throughout life."
Shortly after the BJP came to power at the Centre in 2014, the Sangh Pariwar said that it would popularize Ekatma Manav.
Lekhi said that renaming Race Course Road to "Ekatma" would be a fitting tribute to Upadhyaya on his birth centenary.
