In what appears to be a case of honour killing, a 26-year-old Muslim woman was found dead hours after she shot and uploaded a video of herself, claiming that her life was in danger.
According to NDTV, it appeared that the woman in the video, identified as one Soni, was hiding in a train toilet.
Speaking into the microphone of her headphones, she looked at the camera and said clearly, "My family wants to kill me. I want to marry Imran but my family is taking me away to our village. My father and my brother want to kill me."
Soni said in a firm voice, "Main balig hoon, aur apni zindagi ki maalik hoon." (I am an adult and the arbiter of my life.)
She also said that she was being taken to Hathras, a town in Uttar Pradesh.
According to the Asian Age, the clip, which has been circulating in social media over the last couple of days, caught the attention of the Uttar Pradesh police. They traced the woman back to her hometown, only to find that she was already dead.
The police exhumed the woman's body but found that it bore no signs of struggle. As a post-mortem could not establish the cause of death, the forensics department has joined the probe.
Based on Soni's video, the UP police have filed an FIR against all the six members of her family — her parents and four brothers. The whole family has been reported as missing.
A News World India report claims that Soni had incurred the wrath of her family by deciding to marry her maternal cousin, Imran.
