The outpouring of nostalgia on social media following the controversy surrounding excessive lead in Maggi Noodles pointed to one amazing fact--the absolute invasion of Indian hearts by a Swiss brand.

A handful of foreign brands in India have achieved that kind of positioning and loyalty. They have been around for so long and been so popular with consumers that they are perceived as local, or home-grown in India.

Nestle's Maggi and Nescafe, Unilever's Pond's, Cadbury's chocolates and Nokia's affordable mobile phones are among such brands that have been bestsellers in their respective categories, and loved by millions of Indians.
