It has been generally accepted that nothing and no one emerged unscathed from the disaster that was Sajid Khan's 'Humshakals'. The movie, which was inflicted upon audiences in June last year, has become one of the most universally derided films in recent memory, right up there with 'RGV Ki Aag' (2007). Incidentally, both films hold a '2 out of 10' rating on IMDB.
Most notably, a large section of Bollywood panned the film — a rarity. Cast members Saif Ali Khan and Bipasha Basu event went on record to express their regrets about appearing in the film.
But one person who claims to have benefitted from the film is actor Ram Kapoor. In an interview to Mumbai Mirror published on Tuesday, the 'Badey Achhey Lagtey Hai' actor said, "'Humshakals' has done wonders for me. After seeing me in drag, the audience is prepared for anything which isn't bad."
If that sounds like self-deprecating sarcasm, he went on to elaborate further: "On TV I've been playing the same kind of character for years. 'Udaan' gave me a bigger platform but the roles didn't get any different."
"I've always wanted to do a masala entertainer that'd break the stereotype, announce that I was available for commercial cinema and not just for festival films. 'Humshakals' opened unexpected doors for me."
One of the "unexpected doors", of course, is the adult comedy 'Kuch Kuch Locha Hai', in which he stars alongside Sunny Leone. It releases this Friday and the trailer doesn't look too encouraging.
Please give us a moment as we reminisce about the Ram Kapoor we once knew, from 'Monsoon Wedding' and 'Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi'.
