A new poster series on Facebook, designed by a group of graphic artists, holds a mirror to society through hard-hitting commentary on India's various social evils.
Titled #WakeUpIndia, the series by the group that calls itself The Stupid Design, in association with The Logical Indian, takes a grim, realistic look at topics ranging from female foeticide, child labour and farmers' suicide, to rape and even casteism. The posters carry a small, minimal illustration, along with a succinct, crisp slogan.
"There are some things money can't buy — #DomesticViolence."
The above statement, coupled with a powerful illustration of a woman being weighed in a weighing scale along with a pile of cash and gold makes for thoughtful work of art.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau, about once every five minutes an incident of domestic violence is reported in India, under its legal definition of "cruelty by husband or his relatives".
Since the Delhi gang-rape incident in December 2012, the spotlight has been on rape in India. But BBC reports that it is, in fact, domestic violence which has been the most reported violent crime against women in the country every year for the past 10 years. And campaigners and social workers say that the rise in number of cases registered is mainly down to increased awareness and more reporting.
Varsha Sharma, a senior police officer in the Crime Against Women Cell in Delhi, tells BBC that "it is a good thing" that the number of cases is consistently rising because it means that women are refusing to suffer in silence.
Appurv Gupta, the CEO of The Stupid Design has been intent on bringing awareness to these social issues. With a vision to "spreading the message and focussing the attention of the mainstream media on the real issues", the Delhi-based The Stupid Design has been toying with a range of subjects — from minimal posters, and famous logos, to hilarious checklists.
