A city isn't what you see on a map. It isn't its popular symbols or architecture, however iconic these may be. Kolkata isn't just defined by the Howrah Bridge or Victoria Memorial. Its essence is in the boy playing cricket by the Hooghly River, the newlywed gazing longingly at saris, the bow-tied waiter looking out for customers... Kolkata is the graffiti on its walls, the chaos in its streets. Its story is one of old souls in modern surroundings, of the mundane moments that define everyday life. It's a city whose story unfolds everyday in that particular intersection of history and modernity.
These black-and-white photos, shot on the iPhone 6s using the Hipstamatic app, capture what I see as the heart of Kolkata, or at least glorious fragments of it.
