Dimple Yadav is the incumbent Samajwadi Party (SP) MP from Kannauj who is contesting against BJP’s Subrat Pathak in the 2019 Lok Sabha Election. Yadav has held this seat since 2012 and won even during the 2014 “Modi wave” with a margin of 20,000 votes.

Dimple Yadav forayed into electoral politics in 2009. Her husband, Akhilesh Yadav, had won both the seats he had contested — Firozabad and Kannauj. He retained Kannauj and by-elections were held for Firozabad, where she contested against Congress’s Raj Babbar and lost. In 2014, she won the Kannauj seat in a by-election after Akhilesh Yadav gave up the seat to become chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. She was the first woman to be elected to Parliament from the state uncontested when the two other candidates withdrew their nominations.

Party leaders are confident that she will win this time around as well, buoyed by the alliance between Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party. ″Yes....our position has strengthened after alliance with the BSP....now we have the support of both Muslims and SCs,″ an SP leader told Deccan Herald. While her campaigning is in full swing, she has refused to take a stand on her party colleague Azam Khan’s alleged remarks against Jaya Prada. She called it a “chhoti baat (trivial issue)”.
