Will Congress' Milind Deora Be Able To Snatch Back Mumbai South?

Deora, a two-time former MP, is pitted against sitting Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant.

Congress’ Mumbai South Lok Sabha candidate Milind Deora will take on sitting Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Mumbai votes in the fourth phase of the Lok Sabha polls on 29 April.

In 2014, Sawant had won with a huge margin. According to NDTV, he secured 3,74,000 votes while Deora secured 2,45,000 votes.

Deora, a two-time former MP, is contesting from the same seat again. His father, Murli Deora contested this seat from 1980 until 2004 when Milind Deora took over, the report further said.

Deora won the 2004 and 2009 elections but lost in 2014. He was also the minister of state for communications, information technology and shipping in the UPA government.

Recently Deora tweeted a short clip with a cross-section of people endorsing him, including Chairman of Reliance Industries Limited, Mukesh Ambani. This got a lot of attention because Ambani has never openly taken a stand for or against any politician.

Another prominent businessman in the video was promoter of Kotak Mahindra Bank, Uday Kotak.

Congress had, on 25 March, also given another responsibility to Deora — president of the Mumbai unit of the party.
