Ravi Shastri was on Friday re-appointed as the head coach of the Indian men’s team by the Kapil Dev-led Cricket Advisory Committee. Captain Virat Kohli had openly backed Shastri.

He has been reappointed for a two-year period, ending with the 2021 T20 World Cup in India.

Shastri pipped former India teammates Robin Singh and Lalchand Rajput along with former New Zealand coach Mike Hesson and Australian Tom Moody to the post. Former West Indies and Afghanistan coach Phil Simmons pulled out of the race, citing personal reasons.

Shastri was considered a frontrunner since the BCCI invited applications for head coach. Twitter had a lot to say about CAC’s decision to re-appoint Shastri:

Some even compared the selection process of the coach to that of Congress president. Sonia Gandhi was recently named interim Congress Party president.
