Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav met Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Monday to extend his support for their alliance in Uttar Pradesh.

The SP and BSP had on 12 January announced their alliance for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, agreeing to contest 38 seats each in the state.

“I congratulate Mayawati ji and Akhilesh ji for forging this alliance in national interest. It was necessary in light of the situation in the country right now. Those who were slaves of British are in power right now,” Tejashwi said, quoted ANI, while addressing a joint press conference with Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow.

“SP and BSP are enough to beat Modi ji, the by-elections are also an indication of it. You can also read Rahul ji’s statement, he has said ‘BJP is not going to get seats here, who is in alliance is not important,’” he added.

Tejashwi also said that the CBI and ED had become alliance partners of BJP and were not longer agencies. “Lalu ji is in jail only because Modi ji saw him as a threat,” he added.

Earlier in the day, after meeting Mayawati at her residence in Lucknow, Tejashwi said the BJP would be whitewashed in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in the 2019 election.

“There’s atmosphere today where they want to scrap Baba Saheb’s Constitution and implement ‘Nagpur laws,’” he said.

At the announcement of the SP-BSP alliance on Saturday, Akhilesh Yadav had said, “The path of Delhi’s power traverses through Uttar Pradesh and our alliance will be able to stop the BJP for sure.”

Expressing confidence in the tie-up, Mayawati had elaborated on excluding Congress from it, saying “In the past I have seen that our votes get transferred to the Congress, but not vice-versa. We do not gain from alliance with Congress, whereas vote transfer is perfect in SP-BSP tie-up.”

While asserting it was not disappointed by the exclusion, the Congress has said it will contest all 80 Lok Sabha seats in UP.
