Indian batsman Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of World Cup due to his thumb fracture, reported PTI. Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has been named as his replacement.

“Dhawan has a fracture at the base of the first metacarpal of his left hand. He will remain in cast until mid-July which rules him out of ICC World Cup. We have requested Rishab Pant as the replacement,” ANI quoted Sunil Subramaniam, Team India manager, as saying.

Pant was brought in as cover for him after the team management decided to wait on Dhawan’s recovery but assessment of the injury this week did no throw up encouraging results, according to PTI.

Several former players such as Sunil Gavaskar had advocated for Pant’s inclusion in the squad if Dhawan fails to recover quickly enough for India.

Dhawan had suffered a hairline fracture on his thumb during a match-winning 117 against Australia on 9 June.
