CHANDIGARH — The Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), one of the highest religious authorities of the Sikhs, has demanded that Netflix drop a scene from Sacred Games Season 2, in which Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, who plays Sikh police officer Sartaj, is shown throwing his kada into the sea.

The SGPC has described the scene as blasphemous, and has called for Anurag Kashyap, who has directed the series, to apologise to the community. Manjinder Singh Sirsa, an MLA from the opposition Akali Dal, has threatened legal action if the scene is not removed.

Bharatiya Janata Party’s Delhi spokesperson, Tajinder Bagga, best known for violently attacking lawyers and rights activists, has filed a police complaint against Kashyap.

“Kashyap is not playing sacred game but a ‘dangerous’ game by making Sikhs and Muslims stand against each other. While he is calling it a freedom of speech, it is actually an attack on the religious freedom granted by the same Indian constitution,” said Sirsa while talking to HuffPost India.

He demanded the registration of an FIR under section 153 A, 295 A and 298 of of the Indian Penal Code and application of sections of the IT act against Kashyap.

SGPC chief Gobind Singh Longowal said that Bollywood must ensure that Sikh characters should uphold Sikh ethics and principles on screen.

“The kada is part of the five kakars ( five things that Sikhs must wear at all times) and it shouldn’t have been shown being thrown away. This is blasphemous,” Longowal said.

Khan was trolled on social media with many making communal jibes.
