Rohit Sharma opened the innings with Mayank Agarwal on the first day of the opening Test against South Africa and his unbeaten half century took India to 91 at lunch.

Rohit was unbeaten on 52 with five fours and two sixes. Mayank Agarwal made 39 till lunch.

It was the first half-century as a Test opener for Rohit.

Several former cricketers, including Sourav Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh, had rallied behind Rohit, saying he should take the opener’s slot in Test cricket as well.

Skipper Virat Kohli had said on Tuesday, according to PTI, that Rohit’s promotion to the opening slot in Tests could end up making the line-up “more lethal”.

″...if he does that (succeeds in the opening role), then our batting order at the top becomes more lethal. It is difficult to have a player like that to not start every time,” Kohli was quoted as saying by PTI.

″...if he comes into his own then the whole batting order looks a completely different batting order anywhere in the world,” added the skipper.

With Rohit’s impressive 52 in the opening Test against South Africa, several Twitter users couldn’t stop gushing about him.
