Samajwadi Party youth leader Richa Singh said on Twitter early on Thursday that she was hospitalised after being beaten by members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and the police in Allahabad on Tuesday.
The tweet included a photo of Singh lying in a hospital bed.
“I was brutally attacked by Allahabad police and ABVP goons yesterday during a student’s protest at Allahabad University, I am suffering jaw and head injury and admitted in hospital,” the tweet said.
It also alleged that the police had lodged an FIR against her on false charges.
The incident took place when Singh and others were trying to hold a protest after SP leader Akhilesh Yadav was allegedly stopped at the Lucknow airport and was not given permission to fly to Allahabad where he was supposed to address students.
Some other Twitter handles had said on Tuesday that Singh, who was earlier president of the Allahabad University Students’ Union, had been attacked.
Protests erupted across Uttar Pradesh after the incident with Yadav.
SP Chhatra Sabha leader Illyas Adnan that when SP student members and leaders tried to go on a ‘shanti march’, the police attacked them.
Sabrang India quoted Adnan as saying, “They beat up several SP leaders including Dhananjay Yadav, Azamgarh MLA Sangram Yadav and also Mahindra Patel from Phulpur who were present at the protest. But were particularly brutal in the manner in which they beat up Richa Singh. She sustained head injuries and they also broke two of her teeth! She fell unconscious but we were not even allowed to take her to the hospital. She was arrested and taken to police lines.”
