CJI Ranjan Gogoi Says He Will Go To Kashmir To Check On Access To J-K HC

The Supreme Court also allowed Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad to visit Srinagar, Baramulla, Anantnag and Jammu.

Taking serious note of the ongoing crisis in Kashmir in the aftermath of the abrogation of Article 370, Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said on Monday he will visit Srinagar to take stock of the situation.

A bench of Chief Justice Gogoi, justices SA Bobde and SA Nazeer said since the shutdown was in the valley, cases pertaining to it should be dealt by the Jammu and Kashmir High Court.

The Supreme Court was on Monday hearing a bunch of petitions regarding the clampdown in the state.

During the hearing lawyer Vrinda Grover who represented, Kashmir Times Executive Editor Anuradha Bhasin, told the court that it was difficult to approach the high court in Jammu and Kashmir because of lack of internet and public transport.

PTI reported that CJI Gogoi said, “It’s very very serious if people are unable to approach the HC, I will myself visit Srinagar.”

The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Centre to take all efforts to restore normalcy in Kashmir.

The court also allowed former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad to visit Srinagar, Baramulla, Anantnag and Jammu. Gogoi, however said, “He will not make any speeches or hold any public rally as per his own submissions.”

The Centre told the Supreme Court that all Kashmir-based newspapers were running and the government had been offering all kinds of assistance. It also said that TV channels like Doordarshan and others private ones along with FM networks are working in the state.

The bench asked Attorney General KK Venugopal, appearing for the Centre, to put details of these steps taken on an affidavit.
