“Time to get Rajinified”, says the trailer for superstar Rajinikanth’s Pongal film Petta. The slickly cut trailer, released on Friday, combines action, drama, comedy and romance with some signature Rajini moves.
Men fly into the air during fight scenes, candles blow out as the Tamil superstar walks by and sunglasses slide up and down his nose.
At one point, Rajinikanth laughs as he tells a man to be careful because “if I hit you, even your underwear will fly off and your dignity will not recover”. Ahem.
Within an hour of its release, the Petta trailer had got close to half a million views on YouTube.
The film stars Rajinikanth as a gangster named Kaali, with Simran and Trisha as his romantic interests. Vijay Sethupathi plays bad guy Jithu while Bollywood star Nawazuddin Siddiqui makes his Tamil debut with the character of Singaar Singh.
Petta is directed by Karthik Subbaraj, known for inventive, entertaining films such as Jigarthanda and Pizza. His last film, Mercury, starring Prabhu Deva, was a thriller without any dialogues.
The combination of the unpredictable director and the iconic star has been much awaited by fans. The film is set to release on 11 January 2019.
At the audio launch of the film, Rajinikanth had praised the director and said, “Karthik Subbaraj has taken me back to the 1990s in Petta. He has extracted from me what I used to perform three to four decades ago. He has crafted every shot as a die-hard fan of me.”
Rajinikanth’s last film 2.0, a sequel to Enthiran, was one of the highest-grossing films of 2018.
