Two people have died and five rescued after a building collapsed in Mumbai’s Dongri, BMC Disaster Management Cell said on Tuesday.

The Abdul Hamid Dargah Dongari on Tandel street in Dongri collapsed and three teams of the NDRF were rushed to the site.

Reports said 40-50 people are feared trapped in the debris.

TV channels showed dramatic visuals of a child, wrapped in a cloth bundle, being carried out of the debris by rescue workers. There was no word about the child’s condition, PTI reported.

CM Devendra Fadnavis told reporters that around 15 families were feared trapped. The 100-year-old building had been given for redevelopment and an inquiry would held to ascertain who was responsible for the building’s collapse, he said.

The fire brigade, Mumbai Police and civic officials also rushed to the site to carry out the rescue operation, PTI said. Constricted lanes have made it difficult to access the area, reduced to a mass of rubble, twisted concrete and broken wires, the news agency said.

A green corridor has been provided for all emergency services and rescue operations, Mumbai Police said.

Some part of the building was left standing after the collapse.

Scores of locals joined in the effort, forming a human chain to help in removing the debris brick by brick and picking up slabs of concrete to locate those buried.

Ambulances could not reach the site and had to be parked around 50 metres away.

An eyewitness told PTI the building collapse felt like a quake.
