India was glued to screens — on their phones, laptops, TV — when Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that he would address the nation between 11:45 am and 12:00 noon.
Now, since the only time Modi addressed the nation in an impromptu address was during demonetisation, speculation was rife on what he was likely to announce. Will it be another demonetisation? Will he declare emergency? Is it war with Pakistan? — these were some of the jokes doing the rounds of social media.
After a nail-biting 45-minute wait, Prime Minister Modi announced that India successfully targeted a live satellite on a low earth orbit. He said that India had become the fourth country after Russia, US and China to get this technology.
However, after the long wait, Twitter users seemed extremely unmoved by Modi’s announcement.
