The Congress announced on Thursday that veteran party leader Kamal Nath would be the next Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, a day after it staked claim to form the government in the state.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi held deliberations with central observers and MLAs at his residence on Thursday. The main contenders for the post were Nath and Jyotiraditya Scindia. Gandhi met the party observer AK Antony early morning along with the state unit in-charge and later met the contenders, reported PTI.

Both Nath and Scindia were called in from Bhopal for last-minute discussions with the party president before a final call was taken on who will be the chief minister

Gandhi had also sought the views of party workers through an internal messaging platform after he sent out a pre-recorded audio message and sought their feedback on their choice of chief ministerial candidate.

After a see-saw battle during vote count on Tuesday, Congress emerged as the single largest party in Madhya Pradesh with 114 seats, two short of a simple majority. BSP chief Mayawati and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav announced their parties’ support to the Congress in Madhya Pradesh.
