Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader LK Advani wrote a blog post on Monday, just days ahead of the party’s foundation day on 6 April. He urged the party to “look back, look ahead and look within”.

He said that the the BJP has been committed to freedom of choice of every citizen at personal as well as political level. The BJP leader added that the party never regarded those who disagree with it politically as “enemies” or “anti-national”, but only as “adversaries”.

He said that the proud hallmark of the BJP has been the defense of democracy and democratic traditions, both within the party and in the larger national setting.

One of the priorities of the party, according to him, “is electoral reforms, with special focus on transparency in political and electoral funding”.

The blog, written almost five years after he wrote the last piece on its web page, is titled ‘NATION FIRST, PARTY NEXT, SELF LAST’, which he said has been the guiding principle of his life.

Advani also reflected on the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. BJP has dropped Advani from its list of candidates. Party chief Amit Shah will contest from Gandhinagar, where Advani is the sitting MP.

He said elections are an occasion for honest introspection by all the stakeholders in Indian democracy.
