The move, announced by Home Minister Amit Shah in the Rajya Sabha, came amid a complete shut down of movement in Kashmir. Phone lines were disconnected, the internet was turned off, curfews were imposed and political leaders were arrested, making sure all forms of dissent was muffled.

Shah told the Rajya Sabha much later on Monday that Kashmir would be bifurcated into two union territories — Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
