The Narendra Modi-led BJP government on Monday pulled an unprecedented move by dismantling the state of Jammu and Kashmir and taking away its special status by scrapping Article 370.
The move, announced by Home Minister Amit Shah in the Rajya Sabha, came amid a complete shut down of movement in Kashmir. Phone lines were disconnected, the internet was turned off, curfews were imposed and political leaders were arrested, making sure all forms of dissent was muffled.

While the measures were put in place in the early hours of Monday and troop deployment has been increased over the last week, there was no information on why these steps had been taken.
