There Were Zero Women In The Bollywood Delegation That Met PM Modi On Tuesday

Twitter users pointed out that it is 2018, and yet 'no one cared to include even one woman in the delegation'.

A Bollywood delegation that met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mumbai on Tuesday drew major flak online for its complete absence of women.

The delegation, which met the prime minister to discuss issues of the film industry, included producers Karan Johar, Sidharth Roy Kapur, Ritesh Sidhwani, Rakesh Roshan, Ronnie Screwwala, Prasoon Joshi, the chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), and actors Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn.

In a pointed remark, Alankrita Srivastava, director of Lipstick Under My Burkha, wrote on Twitter —

In a year that saw the #MeToo movement rock the entertainment industry, people wondered why the delegation did not think to include women representatives.

Some directed their criticism at the prime minister.

This was the second meeting of filmmakers with the prime minister since 24 October, this year. Filmmakers led by Ritesh Sidhwani, along with actor Aamir Khan, had met the PM for the first time in October, another meeting that included no women.

PTI reported the delegation spoke to Modi about Bollywood’s contribution to the exchequer and fiscal growth, and the issues faced by the industry.

The prime minister reportedly said a special committee would be set up to look into matters of the industry and address them urgently.
