Almost three years after a case of sedition was filed against students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in connection with a campus event during which alleged “anti-national” slogans were allegedly raised, the Delhi Police has finalised the draft chargesheet in the case.

The chargesheet names Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya as the main accused, The Indian Express reported.

It also names eight others and has been sent to the public prosecutor for vetting, the report added.

“Police have found concrete evidence against the eight others, all hailing from Kashmir… two of them are students at JNU, two at Jamia Millia Islamia, one at Aligarh Muslim University, one is a Muradnagar-based doctor and two are students,” a senior police officer told The Indian Express.

The chargesheet is based on the FIR filed after the event was held on 9 February 2016. The event was held at the varsity’s campus against hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

Kumar, Khalid and Bhattacharya were arrested in February 2016 on charges of sedition in connection with the event, but were released on bail. Their arrest had triggered widespread protests.
