Chandrayaan 2′s ‘Vikram’ lander’s descent was as planned and normal performance was observed up to an altitude of 2.1 km, but the communication to ground station was lost subsequently, ISRO chief K Sivan said on Saturday.

Data is being analysed, he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was at the ISRO Centre in Bengaluru, said, “there are ups and downs in life”. “This is not a small achievement. The country is proud of you. Hope for the best. You all have done a big service to nation, science and mankind,” he told the scientists at ISRO.

Modi also tweeted, “India is proud of our scientists! They’ve given their best and have always made India proud. These are moments to be courageous, and courageous we will be!”

He was accompanied by 60 students who were selected by ISRO though an online quiz to watch the soft landing of Vikram.

Vikram’s soft landing was scheduled between 1.30 am and 2.30 am, followed by the rollout of rover Pragyan between 5.30 am and 6.30 am.
