The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) on Thursday filed a writ petition against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the Supreme Court.
ANI reported that in it’s petition, the IUML has asked the Supreme Court to declare the the bill “illegal and void”.
ANI reported that Congress leader and senior advocate Kapil Sibal will represent the aggrieved party.

The contentious bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday 125 MPs voting in its favour and 99 against it. It was passed in the Lok Sabha on 9 December.
Live Law quoted the petition filed by advocates Haris Beeran and Pallavi Pratap as saying, “It is submitted that illegal migrants are class by itself and therefore any law which is applicable to them should be irrespective of any religion, cast or nationality basis.”
The report said that the IUML has said that they were aggrieved by the discrimination in the bill base on religion but did not oppose migrants being given citizenship.
Several states in the north east saw massive protests against the bill. A curfew was imposed in Assam and flag marches were conducted by the army in Guwahati because of the protests that went violent.
While Home Minister Amit Shah has claimed that the bill was not against Muslims, experts have said that not just Muslims, but even Hindus may be affected by this bill.
Constitutional expert Faizan Mustafa told Huffpost India in an interview how the controversial bill against the Constitution. He said, “CAB strikes at the very root of our republic and violates our Constitutional vision. It is the very betrayal of our republic because our republic is founded on the principles of justice, equality and on principles of liberty.”
