Actor-turned-politician and incumbent BJP MP Hema Malini won in the Mathura Lok Sabha constituency by over 3 lakh votes. She contested against Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) candidate Narendra Singh and Congress candidate Mahesh Pathak in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Malini congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party president Amit Shah for the “stupendous” performance of the BJP.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Hema Malini had won with a margin over 3 lakh votes against RLD’s Jayant Chaudhary, who was then incumbent MP in the constituency.
During campaigning, Hema Malini had said that she was confident of a win, despite the numerous gaffes in the run up to the polls, for she which she was massively trolled on social media. During an interview with News18, she had said she was sure she would win because she had done a lot of work in her constituency, but she did not remember all the work that she did.
She was criticised for her comments on the monkey menace in Vrindavan whenr she had said, ”Coexistence hai na. Monkey kahan jaega? Problem kya hai, yahan aane waale yaatri Frooti dete hain, samosa de de ke unko kharab kar diya. Unko sirf phal dijiye (It’s a coexistence. Where will the monkey go? The problem is the tourists give Frooti and samosa to the monkeys, they should only give them fruits).”
Vrindavan is considered a holy city and is visited by thousands of devotees each year. In her 2014 campaign, she had promised to tackled the monkey menace.
Hema Malini’s photo ops in her constituency had also raised eyebrows. She was trolled on Twitter when, in March, she shared pictures from a farm on her first day of the campaign. “Began my Lok Sabha campaign today with the Govardhan Kshetra where I had the opportunity to interact with women working in the fields. A few fotos for u of my first day of campaign,” Hema Malini had tweeted. Twitter users pointed out that the photos of her cutting hay looked staged.
However, she had later clarified, “I am an actress, a celebrity. I don’t see this in Mumbai. When I go to the villages, I like that environment and I like it. Even if I acted, it was fun. What is wrong with it? Everybody was happy to see the picture back in Mumbai.”
In April she had tweeted a photo of herself driving a tractor. In the photos one could see air coolers placed on the tractor, directed towards her.
