Helena Bonham Carter, who plays Princess Margaret in the newest season of Netflixâs âThe Crown,â recently shared one of her own run-ins with royalty.
The actor stopped by âWatch What Happens Liveâ with Andy Cohen on Tuesday and confirmed a fanâs inquiry that she once asked Prince William to be her daughterâs godfather when she was a bit intoxicated.
âI wasnât that drunk, but enough drunk for me not to drink anymore,â the 53-year-old told Andy Cohen. âHe wasnât totally sober himself â not in a bad way, it was just very jolly.â
Which sounds like just the right mood to ask someone for a massive, massive favor.
âThing is, Iâd spent all my friends as godparents on my first child, so Billy had 11 godparents. And so I thought I could make up for Nell â you know who suddenly came along and we didnât have any left. I thought, âWell, if I give her Prince William that would cover,â you know?â
But it seems the prince wasnât ready for the responsibility.
âHe just said, âYou donât want me to be godfather to your child.â And I left and obviously it didnât work out. Funny enough,â she said.
When the actor first relayed the story to People back in 2014, she said that she propositioned the duke back when they were all vacationing on the island of Mustique â a royal family favorite â and he was dating Kate Middleton.
Itâs a bit unclear now how the prince would react to Bonham Carter starring in a fictionalized series based on his family. It seems William didnât have the most enthusiastic reaction when greeting another actor from the series, Olivia Colman, who plays Queen Elizabeth II in the show.
âHe asked what I was doing at the moment before he quickly added, âActually, I know what youâre doing,ââ Colman said during an appearance on âThe Graham Norton Showâ back in August. âI was so excited and asked, âHave you watched it?ââ
The actor said that the Williamâs answer âwas a firm, âno,ââ but added that the prince was âvery charming and very lovelyâ throughout their encounter.
