HD Kumaraswamy Govt Loses Trust Vote In Karnataka Assembly

The confidence motion moved by Kumaraswamy was defeated with 99 members voting for the motion and 105 against it.

Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy-led Congress-JD(S) coalition government lost the trust vote in Karnataka Assembly on Tuesday. Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar announced that 99 MLAs had voted in favour of the confidence motion moved by Kumaraswamy and 105 against it.

After losing the trust vote, Kumaraswamy went to Raj Bhavan and submitted his resignation to Governor Vajubhai Vala. The resignation was accepted with immediate effect but Kumaraswamy was asked to continue as caretaker chief minister till alternative arrangements are made.

BJP state chief BS Yeddyurappa called it a “victory of democracy”. “People were fed up with HD Kumaraswamy government. We assure people of Karnataka that a new era of development is starting,” Yeddyurappa was quoted as saying by ANI.

“We will address the needs of farmers suffering from drought. Will take appropriate decision at the earliest,” he added.

On the next step, Yeddyurappa, according to PTI, said an appropriate decision would be taken “as early as possible”.

Section 144 has been imposed in Bengaluru for 48 hours, starting from 6 pm on Tuesday. All bars and wine shops will remain closed and anyone found in violation will be punished, ANI quoted Bengaluru Police Commissioner Alok Kumar as saying.

The speaker had made it clear Monday night before adjourning the House that voting on the confidence motion would be completed by 6 pm on Tuesday and would not be deferred under any circumstances.

The ruling JD(S)-Congress coalition members had forced the speaker to adjourn the House, despite repeated reminders by him that they had given a commitment to complete the trust vote process on Monday itself.

The ruling coalition defied the two deadlines set by Governor Vajubhai Vala — to complete the process by 1.30 pm on Friday and later by the end of the day.
