Game Of Thrones: Varys Actor Conleth Hill Was Not Impressed To Learn His Character Was Being Killed Off

He previously admitted he "took it very personally" when he learned of his character's demise.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the final episode of Game Of Thrones.

Game Of Thrones fans have unearthed a clip of actor Conleth Hill reacting to the news of his character’s death, in which he appears to be visibly annoyed.

Conleth is best known for his role as Lord Varys in all eight series of Game Of Thrones, a character who was burned to death by one of Daenerys’ dragons in one of the show’s final episodes.

During a table read prior to the show’s last series being filmed, Conleth discovered his character’s fate, and because the whole thing was caught on camera, fans are able to see how he reacted.

And let’s just say… it was not well.

Yes, the clip shows an irritated Conleth closing his script and casting it aside, all while seated next to Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys, the character responsible for Varys’ demise.

Conleth has previously admitted he wasn’t totally thrilled about his character’s fate, telling Entertainment Weekly: “I took it very personally. I took it as a person, not as an actor or an artist.

“I understood the reactions of previous actors who had been in the same position a lot more than I did at the time. You can’t help feeling that you failed in some way, that you haven’t lived up to some expectation that you didn’t know about.

“The only thing that consoles you is people who worked a lot harder than you are in the same boat. So that helps. I don’t think anybody who hasn’t been through it can identify with it. They think, ‘What’s all the fuss about? You’re all finishing anyway.’ But you take it personally, you can’t help it.”

He added: “In retrospect, [I thought the death scene was] great. At the time, nothing could console me. I kept thinking: ‘What did I do wrong?’.

“There wasn’t any pre-warning. All these famous stories about [actors on Game Of Thrones] being taken out for a meal or being phoned at the very least [to notify them that their character was being killed off]. This was just reading cold hard copy.”

Many Game Of Thrones fans have taken issue with the direction the final series took, which prompted some to launch a petition for the last episodes to be re-filmed, which has been criticised by cast members, including Sophie Turner.

This led to a fundraiser being organised in aid of Emilia Clarke’s charity, intended as a demonstration to the cast that they aren’t the ones fans have an issue with.
