Rescuers on Thursday pulled out the body of one of the 15 Meghalaya miners trapped in a flooded mine. The body, which was first spotted last week, has been sent for postmortem.

The body had disintegrated and slipped to the bottom of the main shaft in course of the Navy’s efforts to pull it out of the flooded mine on Tuesday. It was found on Wednesday evening, according to Hindustan Times.

It took six rescuers— two from the NDRF, three from the Navy and one civil hospital staffer — to pull out the body from the flooded mine, the report added.

The 15 miners were trapped inside the mine on 13 December last year.

According to five miners who had a narrow escape, one of the workers could have accidentally punctured the walls of possibly another abandoned nearby and flooded this one.

The state government has announced Rs 1 lakh interim relief for families of all the trapped miners and the Supreme Court is monitoring the case on a weekly basis. The next hearing is scheduled for Monday.
