NEW DELHI—Mulayam Singh Yadav, founder of the Samjawadi Party, won from Mainpuri constituency in Uttar Pradesh by a margin of over 94,000 votes

He was pitted against Prem Singh Shakya of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Yadav, who has been elected from this seat four times in the past, had told voters ahead of polling that this would be his last election. Exit polls predicted that Singh had a tough battle and Mainpuri, which has been a SP bastion since 1996, had tilted towards the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Recently, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) gave Mulayam and his son Akhilesh Yadav clean chit in a case accusing the two of possessing Disproportionate Assets as compared to their known sources of income.

In an affidavit filed in the SC, the CBI said, “No prima facie evidence of commission of offence was found during inquiry and the inquiry was not converted into and FIR.”
