Veteran Congress leader Sheila Dikshit lost in the North East Delhi constituency to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Manoj Tiwari in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Aam Aadmi Party’s Dilip Pandey was also in the fray. Tiwari retained the North East Delhi seat comfortably with a margin of over 3.66 lakh votes.

Development was the main issue of Dikshit’s campaign. Asked about her plans for North East Delhi, Dikshit had said she was saddened over the “poor condition of roads and sanitation” in the area.

“Nothing is done when houses and shops come up and then suddenly you say it’s illegal. That is very unfair. A city needs to be developed according to needs of the people. If you do not do so, you ruin the people and their livelihood means,” she also said.

In 2013, Dikshit, Delhi’s longest-serving chief minister, was defeated from the New Delhi seat in the Assembly election by AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal. Since then, she served as Kerala’s governor for a few months and briefly popped up as the Congress’s Uttar Pradesh Chief Ministerial candidate.

Dikshit had replaced Ajay Maken as the Delhi party chief in January. During her campaign, she kept reminding voters of her developmental track record as Chief Minister.
