The Election Commission on Tuesday directed Facebook to remove posters carrying Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman’s photos.

The posters were shared by BJP leader and Delhi MLA OP Sharma on the social media platform, reported The Indian Express.

The Election Commission, according to the report, received a complaint on its cVIGIL app. The voters can register any poll-related complaints through the app.

Sharma told ANI that his post was done before the poll body announced the dates for the Lok Sabha elections. Sharma had shared the posters on 1 March.

The EC has also issued a show-cause notice to Sharma for putting up the posters. He has been asked by the commission to take down the post and give a reply by Thursday, PTI reported.

This comes just days after the commission had issued an advisory to all political parties asking them to desist from using photographs of defence personnel as part of their election propaganda.

Lok Sabha elections will begin on 11 April and polling would be held over seven phases through 19 May, followed by counting of all votes on 23 May, the Election Commission had announced on 10 March.
