Soon after skipper Virat Kohli shared a throwback picture with MS Dhoni on Thursday, Twitter was flooded with speculations about the latter’s retirement.
When asked during a press conference, Chairman of selectors MSK Prasad clarified and said, “no update on MS Dhoni’s retirement. The news is incorrect”.
“I don’t know from where these rumours started. I don’t think they are true,” PTI further quoted him as saying.
Sakshi Dhoni also tweeted to quell all conjectures:
The speculations about Dhoni’s retirement began after India’s exit from the 2019 World Cup and have continued since. Former captains, like Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble, have suggested that the decision needs to be taken.
Kumble is “not sure” whether Dhoni fits in the current set-up and wants the selectors to “have a conversation” with him. Ganguly said that the team must prepare for life without Dhoni, but added that the decision must be taken by Dhoni himself.
Dhoni’s fans were bitterly disappointed when his name did not figure in the Indian team for the upcoming three-match T20 series against South Africa. Prasad later clarified that the former skipper had expressed his unavailability.
On Thursday, several Twitter users wondered if Kohli’s tweet was a hint at Dhoni’s retirement.
