Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief Chandrababu Naidu and several other leaders of the party were put under preventive detention on Wednesday, said reports.

ANI reported that this was so that they could be prevented from participating in the ‘Chalo Atmakur’ rally against alleged political violence by the Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP government.

The reports said that Naidu’s son Nara Lokesh, former Andhra Pradesh Minister and TDP leader Bhuma Akhila Priya and former TDP MLA Tangirala Sowmya were also taken into preventive custody.

Nara Lokesh was reportedly seen arguing with the police outside his home. NDTV quoted him as saying, “It is my fundamental right to protest.”

The ANI report also said that Naidu was not being allowed to meet the media.

Hindustan Times reported that Naidu was supposed to sit on a fast from 8 am to 8 pm on Wednesday.

The newspaper reported that Section 144 was imposed in many parts of Andhra Pradesh including Narasaraopeta, Sattenapalle, Palnadu and Gurajala regions.

While TDP has claimed eight of it workers were killed by YSRCP workers, the YSRCP was also supposed to protest against the alleged violence during the time of the Naidu-led TDP government in the state.
