The protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) has now spread across the country, with thousands having descended on the streets on Thursday in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Lucknow, Bhopal, Pune and other cities.

Home Minister Amit Shah’s claims that the CAA and the National Register of Citizens won’t affect Muslims of the country has failed to pacify the people of this country, who have been on the streets, literally, vehemently opposing the CAA. And at the forefront of this robust protest have been young women of India, telling the Narendra Modi-led BJP government enough is enough.

Last week the protests were sporadic, but the police brutality in Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia University and UP’s Aligarh Muslim University — the visuals of students being treated like criminals — stirred something in people. With each day since Sunday, the crowd has only been swelling..

And one of the images that has been circulated widely and resonated with people was that of Jamia students Ayesha Renna and Ladeeda Farzana standing their ground even when they were outnumbered by police in riot gear, armed with lathis mercilessly beating a fellow protester.

And since then, women have taken to the streets and spoken up against the police crackdown and agains the government and they haven’t minced their words.

Look at how this woman at a protest in Delhi ask Narendra Modi “Who are you to define what India is, this is India, India is not what you are trying to make it.”

And no, she doesn’t stop there, she has more to say:

And more!!

This woman in Bengaluru tells Amit Shah, “I am not going to be dictated by you.” She says she will stand alone and protest if she needs to.

This protester at Jamia told the media how women students in the university felt scared on the night the Delhi police entered campus without even permission from university authorities. They were identified as Srijan Chawla and Bhumika Saraswati of the Mass Communication and Research Centre of the university.

And these girls raised slogans of “Jamia ki ladkiyan zindabad, zindabad!” for showing the path of resistance.

And this woman in Delhi’s Red Fort explains why CAA and NRC together will spell doom for the country like a boss. When asked if she is scared, she says, “How many people will you put in jail?”

And how do we forget Jamia student Anugya? She was bite to NDTV became viral the night after the Jamia crackdown. “I am Hindu, but I will fight from the frontline,” she had said.
