UP Police on Tuesday arrested one of the prime accused in the killing of a policeman during mob violence in Bulandshahr, IANS reported.

The axe used to attack the policeman was recovered from the man’s possession, police said.

The man, Kalua, is accused of hitting Inspector Subodh Kumar with an axe on the head, IANS reported.

His arrest takes the total number of accused held in this case to 30, a police officer said.

Kalua told police that on December 3, he was felling a tree to block a road. When the inspector stopped him from doing so, he attacked him with an axe, the officer said.

On December 27, police had arrested Prashant Nat, who allegedly shot the Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh dead after the axe attack.

Singh and 20-year-old Sumit Kumar were shot dead when a mob attacked police on 3 December. The violence had broken out near Chingrawathi police post after cattle carcasses were found strewn in a field near Mahaw village.

An FIR against 27 named people and 50-60 unidentified people was registered for the violence. One of the main suspects among the 27 named in the FIR, local Bajrang Dal leader Yogesh Raj, is still at large, while an Army jawan, Jitendra Malik, has been arrested and remanded in custody.
