Twitter Has A Field Day Trolling BJP's Cheeky Tweet Promoting 'The Accidental Prime Minister'

What was meant to be a dig at the Congress quickly backfired at the BJP as Twitter users began to troll the party, and how.

The BJP on Thursday added to the controversy surrounding the film The Accidental Prime Minister, starring Anupam Kher as former prime minister Manmohan Singh, by tweeting out its trailer from its official handle.

The tweet called the film, based on the book with the same name by Sanjaya Baru who was Singh’s media advisor and spokesperson, a “riveting tale of how a family held the country to ransom for 10 years”.

No prizes for guessing that the dig was at the Gandhi family. The trailer also seeks to portray Congress leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi as villainous characters who ruled the country with Singh as the figurehead prime minister.

The tweet also hints that the film shows that Singh was only made prime minister to “hold the chair” until Rahul Gandhi was ready to take over.

The BJP has used the rhetoric of “dynastic politics” to attack the Congress for years. They have also criticised Singh for being a “silent” prime minister—Singh himself recently countered this, saying he was never afraid of speaking to the press. Narendra Modi himself is infamous for never having held a press conference after he became prime minister.

What was meant to be a dig at the Congress quickly backfired on the BJP as Twitter users began to troll the party, and how.

Many people said that the BJP was using the film as propaganda for 2019 elections.

Others called for a sequel to be made on PM Narendra Modi.

Remember how a tough question by a BJP worker in Puducherry was answered by Modi with “Puducherry ko vanakkam”? Let’s say Twitter users found the perfect opportunity to use it against the BJP.

Some Twitter users were just shocked that someone handling BJP’s Twitter had decided tweeting out the trailer of a film was a good idea.

I&B minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore bizarrely claimed that the Congress was questioning “freedom” by criticising the BJP’s action.
