Acclaimed Bengali Filmmaker Mrinal Sen Dies at 95

The director, 95, passed away at his residence in Bhawanipur.

Acclaimed filmmaker Mrinal Sen died on Sunday in Kolkata. He was 95.

The Bengali film director passed away at his residence in Bhawanipur, the Hindustan Times reported. He is survived by his son. His wife, actor Geeta Sen, passed away in 2017.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee called his death “a great loss to the film industry”.

Sen along with Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak was among the pioneers of parallel cinema in India and reshaped the profile of cinema in the country, starting with film Bhuvan Shome.

Some of his best known work include, Neel Akasher Neechey, Ek Din Achanak, Padatik and Mrigayaa. His trilogy - Interview, Calcutta 71 and Padatik - is considered to be a masterpiece for depicting the social and political upheaval in Kolkata in the ’70s.

CPI Secretary General Sitaram Yechury remembered the filmmaker for his humanistic narrative.

The film industry mourned the loss of the illustrious director.

For his contribution to cinema, Sen has been awarded a Padma Bhushan, Dada Saheb Phalke award, multiple National Awards and international film awards.
