Ishrat Jahan, a BJP member who filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the triple talaq , on Wednesday filed a complaint with the police alleging that her landlord and people in her locality had threatened her for attending a Hindu religious ceremony in West Bengal’s Howrah.

Jahan alleged that her landlord in Howrah asked her to vacate her home. ANI quoted her as saying, “A huge crowd of people gathered outside my house and asked me why I went to attend Hanuman Chalisa event wearing hijab.”

Jahan said that she feared for her life because she had received death threats.

The Indian Express reported that Jahan had attended a Hanuman Chalisa paath in her area that was organised by the BJP. She was reportedly later accosted by people in her locality when she was dropping her son to school.

Jahan said she had filed a complaint at the Golbari police station and sought police protection.

Jahan told The Indian Express, “They even abused me for wearing hijab to the programme. They said they would drive me out of my house and asked me to leave the area. I ran to my house. Later, I went to Golabari Police Station to lodge a complaint and sought police protection.”

The report said that the police were looking into the matter and were yet to file an FIR.
