While speaking to HuffPost India, Vishnu Gupta, national President of Hindu Sena said that despite taking up the matter numerous times with the Delhi government and also with Municipal Corporation of Delhi by various organisations, no action was taken by the concerned authorities.

“Babar was a foreigner who was the founder of the Mughal dynasty and an invader in India. When we are fighting for the existence of Ram mandir in Ayodhya, why the roads in India should be named after Babar? Instead, the place where he was born should have roads and mosques named after him,” said Gupta.

Early morning, a group of the Hindu Sena workers holding a bucket of black paint reached Bengali market area and blackened the road signage installed there. They even pasted stickers of Hindu Sena over it.

Later claiming responsibility through his Facebook and Twitter post, Gupta demanded the name of road should be changed without further delay.

While many applauded the act on social media, some calling it a communal move criticised it.

Times Now has reported that in 2017, Delhi BJP spokesperson Tajinder Singh Bagga had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and requested him to rename Babar Road after martyred Army officer Lieutenant Ummer Fayaz, who killed in Kashmir’s Shopian while attending a wedding.

Lashkar-e-Taiba and Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists had kidnapped Fayaz on May 9 and his dead body was found on May 10 sparking nationwide criticism.

Earlier in 2015, the Narendra Modi-led BJP government renamed Aurangzeb Road after former President APJ Abdul Kalam. The decision was applauded by many who called Aurangzeb the worst Mughal ruler and felt that was good that his name was replaced with “missile man” Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.

In June, a BJP leader from Rajasthan had called Mughal emperor Akbar as characterless while speaking on the occasion of Maharana Pratap Jayanti. He further claimed that Akbar organized an all-women market called Meena bazar where he tried to molest a Rajput princess named Kiran Devi.
