Protests have been raging across the country against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act since Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the bill in Parliament last week. The anger against the government has only been growing since the police brutalities on Jamia Millia Islamia students on Sunday.

The police forcefully entered the campus, chief proctor of the university said, and beat up students and staff members. Vice chancellor of the university, Professor Najma Akhtar, also condemned the police action and said the students were treated with “barbarity”.

Students from several universities across India — Jawaharlal Nehru University, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, IITs among others — are protesting against the police action on students in Jamia. Delhi Police maintains that it used “maximum restraint, minimum force”.

Delhi Police PRO MS Randhawa, in a press conference, said the crime branch will investigate the matter from all angles.

Even as the protests spread in other universities and Opposition parties demand probe into police action, Shah was addressing an election rally in Jharkhand on Monday.

The Home Minister promised the construction of a “sky-high” Ram temple in Ayodhya within four months.

Congress leader Pawan Khera on Monday said Shah should take responsibility of the police action on students because the “Delhi Police comes under him and Delhi’s law and order system is his responsibility”.

CPI’s D Raja also said that “there is a civil war-like situation in the country for which Home Minister Amit Shah and PM Modi should be held responsible.”

“Amit Shah must be held responsible for such brutality by the police. What is the response of the home minister, where is he,” Raja asked, according to PTI.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a series of tweets, called the protests across the country “unfortunate and deeply depressing”.

“Debate, discussion and dissent are essential parts of democracy, but never has damage to public property and disturbance of normal life been a part of our ethos,” he added.

Modi also assured that the amended citizenship law does not affect any Indian of any religion.
